These last years I’ve made several workshops with children between 8 and 12 years where the goal was to introduce them the logic and the challenges behind game development, with a strong emphasis on game design.
Children had to think about a story and some characters, to drew most of the games’ assets, to select different sounds (sfx, ambiances, music…) from sound banks to use for their games, and to fine tune various gameplay variables.
They learnt how to use small game engines like Game Maker or RPG Maker to create simple (but complete) games over one week, most of the time as a team.
You can browse the ‘Game Maker’ or ‘RPG Maker’ sections to have a look to the games they have created (feel free to give your feedbacks!).
